Navigating job interviews as a veteran

Job interviews can be daunting, especially when transitioning from military to civilian life. I’ve been working with veterans who find it challenging to articulate their skills in a way that resonates with employers. It might help to practice answering common interview questions with examples from your service, focusing on leadership and teamwork. Has anyone had success with this approach?

Focusing on teamwork from our service really helped me land my last job! Practicing with friends made a big difference. What interview questions do you find most tricky?.

I totally get how daunting interviews can be… When I was preparing, I found that using the STAR method to frame my experiences helped me a lot — clear, concise stories that tie back to the job requirements. Sometimes, we can think we’re explaining our skills well, but having a friend critique my answers made a big difference.

I know how tough it can be to showcase our skills; I once described leading a complex operation just like managing a team project in civilian life — sounds funny, but it clicked for the interviewer! @mjohnson47, what’s one skill you found easy to relate to a civilian job?

@eforbes88, I found that sharing specific scenarios where I led a team during tough situations helped employers see my problem-solving skills clearly. It felt more relatable than just listing my qualifications. What strategies have worked for you in articulating your experiences?
