Navigating the Civilian Job Market

Transitioning from military to civilian life can feel overwhelming, especially when it comes to job hunting. I recently helped a fellow veteran land a position by tailoring their resume to highlight transferable skills — prioritizing what employers in the civilian world look for. What strategies have worked for you in making this transition?

I totally get how overwhelming it can be — tailoring your resume is key! One thing that helped me was also focusing on networking; reaching out to folks in your desired field can open up unexpected doors. Have you tried connecting with any local veteran networks for support?

I found that leveraging LinkedIn was a game changer. By connecting with people in my target industry and joining relevant groups, I not only expanded my network but also learned about job openings that weren’t advertised. Have you tried using any specific platforms like that, @rmartin195?

It’s so frustrating how easy it’s to overlook our military experience when writing resumes. I think focusing on specific accomplishments, like leading a team or managing a budget, can make a huge difference. Have you tried using the STAR method to highlight those skills? @london_b87 mentioned networking too, which is just as important.
